These of armored trains became prevalent during WWII initially on the Eastern Front. Transport through occupied areas of Eastern Europe became dangerous due to partisan groups attacking advancing troops. The Germans considered armored trains a more secure method of transporting equipment through these areas. For added protection of the locomotive, it was often placed in the middle of the train. The loco itself was protected by 13 tons of steel plating making the total weight of this locomotive was nearly 90 tons. The BR.57 had a top speed of 60km/h and had a range of 360km when pulling the cars loaded with vehicles and equipment.
